What is personal development? Personal development is an over-time process that support a persons advancement into being a more refined and greater version of who they are. To reach that higher level, it is best to continuously improve the inner world – character, values, attitude and mindset.
The best progress starts from within.
Your inner world informs who and how you are as a person. It is the filter you use to interpret your experiences and engage with the external world – all things outside of yourself.
Everyone has the same opportunity to improve qualities of who they are and how they live. It starts with having a willingness to put in effort, and actively work toward improving yourself. Ultimately, it also improves your world.
The effort and commitment required to support your personal development can at times be challenging. Most people want an easy fix that can quickly get them what they want in their outer world. Personal development does not work that way. There isn’t a magic phrase nor can it be bought. It doesn’t matter where you live, or who you are with. It is an over-time process. The process itself creates experiences that will further help you in your development.
How To Have An Active Engagement In Your Personal Development?
- Identify specific values, character traits, attitude, mindset and behaviors you want to embody
- Guard what you allow to enter and grow in your inner world
- Thoughts, spoken words and actions have a powerful influence
- Think no evil, say no evil, see no evil and do no evil
- Diligently take steps toward changing aspect of your character you would like to improve
- Set daily intentions
- Reread statements or books that can keep what you want on the forefront of your mind
- Continuously assess the thoughts and attitudes that you are repeating to yourself
- Place focus on repeating affirming thoughts that matches your desired qualities, but do not try to control completely erasing naturally occurring negative thoughts
- Have pre-created thoughts you can substitute when there’s a negative thought, and repeat aloud with focused attention (e.g. write it out as you repeat)
- Remain connected with your inner world
- It is always communicating with you through feelings (e.g. specific emotions) and sensations (e.g. light versus heavy)
- Practice creating moments of stillness to bring your mental awareness inside of you
- Allow time for daily self-reflection, throughout the day and especially at the end of the day
- Acknowledge and applaud actions aligned with your chosen qualities; then continuously repeat
- Modify and improve what isn’t – setting the intention to embody the qualities, and act how you choose
Remember:
Your personal development takes work, but it is worth it!
So, ask yourself:
What qualities do I want to embody?
What do I desire to achieve?
How am I creating an inner world that supports my personal development?
